Disability Rights Awareness Month 2024 – Reflecting on 30 Years of Progress

This November marks the beginning of Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) 2024, a time to celebrate the strides South Africa has made toward inclusivity while reaffirming our collective commitment to a society where everyone can thrive, regardless of ability. Running from November 3 to December 3, DRAM 2024 celebrates 30 years of democracy, emphasizing the importance of building a disability-inclusive society that ensures equal rights and better quality of life for all.

Key Event: A Webinar on Equal Access to Democratic Rights

In partnership with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF) and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), ProAccess will host a thought-provoking webinar titled:
Promoting Equal Access to Democratic Rights for Individuals with Disabilities.

This virtual event will take place on November 28, 2024, from 17:00 to 18:30, bringing together thought leaders, researchers, and advocates to reflect on legislative progress, intersectionality, and personal experiences over the past three decades.

Webinar Agenda Highlights

  • Legislative Reflections: Dr. Dane Isaacs will review the successes and remaining challenges of disability-focused laws in South Africa.
  • Gender and Disability Intersectionality: Prof. Narnia Bohler-Muller will explore how disability and gender equality intersect in the context of South African democracy.

How Far Have We Come?

South Africa has made significant legislative advances to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities. However, gaps remain in translating policies into meaningful action. Issues such as unequal access to education, employment opportunities, and participation in democratic processes highlight the need for continued advocacy.

DRAM 2024 provides a critical platform to reflect on these challenges, celebrate our successes, and strategize for a more equitable future.

Why This Matters

Disability Rights Awareness Month is more than an observance; it’s a rallying call for collective action. By addressing intersectional issues like gender and disability and fostering inclusive policies, South Africa can build on its democratic foundation to ensure no one is left behind.

Join the Conversation

We encourage all South Africans to attend the webinar and participate in this important discussion. Together, let’s celebrate 30 years of democracy by committing to a society that truly values the rights and contributions of individuals with disabilities.
