Honoring Courage and Resilience: National Women’s Day in South Africa

Today, we pause to honor the courage, resilience, and strength of women across South Africa as we celebrate National Women’s Day. This day is not just a celebration but a powerful reminder of the remarkable history and the enduring spirit of women who have fought for justice, equality, and freedom in our nation.

A Moment of Reflection: The 1956 Women’s March

National Women’s Day commemorates the historic march on August 9, 1956, when approximately 20,000 women from all walks of life gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Led by fearless leaders such as Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams, these women boldly protested against the oppressive pass laws of the apartheid regime.

These laws required South Africans classified as “black” under The Population Registration Act to carry internal passports, known as passbooks. These passbooks restricted movement, perpetuated segregation, and reinforced the systemic control of urbanization during apartheid. The march was a defiant stand against this injustice, and the women’s voices echoed across the nation: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo!” – “You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

ProAccess: Standing Together for Inclusivity and Accessibility

At ProAccess, we are inspired by the legacy of these courageous women as we continue our mission to promote accessibility and inclusivity for all. Whether it’s supporting athletes with disabilities, raising awareness through campaigns, or celebrating Deaf culture, we are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community and beyond.

As we celebrate National Women’s Day, let’s remember that the fight for equality and justice is ongoing. We all have a role to play in advocating for change, uplifting one another, and building a society where everyone, regardless of their gender or ability, is empowered to thrive.
